1. coll [subj: human; often used with едва, еле, кое-как, с трудом etc]

⇒ to manage to survive (albeit with difficulty) on one's pay, the resources available to one etc:

- X едва сводит концы с концами{{}}≈ X barely makes (both) ends meet;

- X hardly keeps his head above water;

- X barely scrapes (gets) by.

2. Also: СВЯЗЫВАТЬ/СВЯЗАТЬ КОНЦЫ С КОНЦАМИ [subj: human or abstr]

⇒ to make various parts of sth. (a theory, the plot of a story etc) jibe, fit together, form a congruous whole:

- X свёл концы с концами{{}}≈ X tied up the loose ends;

- X tied everything together;

- X made things add up.

     ♦ ...Мужикам, по их натуре нужна любая техника, лишь бы она была новой, любая теория, лишь бы она сводила какие-нибудь концы с какими-нибудь другими концами, а женщинам?
